Green Thumb Sunday: Dragon fruit

Dragon fruit

Last October I extracted the seeds from a supermarket Dragon fruit and tried to grow them on. There were lots of seeds and I sowed about half of them (I passed the other half onto other gardeners) and they germinated very well.

I couldn’t keep them all, and some of them have died off over the intervening time, but I have maybe half a dozen left and a couple of them are doing very well.

This one has been living on capillary matting in the grow dome all summer – they don’t seem to like drying out (although they may be more drought tolerant when they get older). It’s currently spending a few days outside whilst the weather is nice and we’ve been working on the inside of the grow dome.

You will notice that they’re ferociously spiny. They’re also (apparently) night blooming and a climbing cactus.
